The Flute in the Community

Equinox Ensemble

Taking music to those who cannot travel to concerts is a very important part of the work of the wind chamber group Equinox. School concerts, community visits and longer-term projects have all proved to be extremely valuable to those undertaking them. Businesses also use Equinox to provide informal concerts in the workplace. Equinox Ensemble

Chris is passionate about using the flute to help improve situations for anyone at a disadvantage in society. In her work for Create she has been lucky enough to be able to attempt to make a difference. The work can encompass just about anything but examples of recent projects include:

Count the Beat – helping year 5 and 6 children from Lewisham improve their maths through music. For more information click below:

Dance to the Music of Art project in Newham – working with excluded secondary school pupils in a project aimed at building the confidence they needed to return to mainstream education. This included a concert in the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London.

Speak with my Voice – an intergenerational writing and music project for vulnerable or disadvantaged older people and primary school children in West London.

Dance Legends – here music and dance came together to inspire primary school children at Gallions School in Beckton.

Moving Music and Sound Stories – informal recitals at hospices, hospitals, residential care homes and day centres. Helen House Hospice was recently featured in a television documentary and work there as well as at similar facilities in the South East is one of the most challenging musical experiences.

Chris has taken part in several concerts, which aim to use music to unlock responses from terminally ill children who may have difficulty in communicating. The elderly in care homes and day centres also respond well to live music. Often this is the highlight of the week for them and Chris has been privileged to play to some very lively audiences who just love a singalong!
